愛知県図書館
A free public library for digital nomads in Nagoya that doubles as a full work day destination. The Aichi Prefectural Library is a 5-story white building set within the old government district grounds, surrounded by the stone walls and moat remnants of the former Nagoya Castle compound. It opened in 1959 and the interior has that quiet, slightly worn atmosphere that serious readers tend to like. Large glass windows on the ground floor let in plenty of natural light and greenery views.
For working, the 4th floor OA space is the best option. It has desks reserved specifically for working adults, is described as bright, and comes with outlets at the seating area. Free WiFi is available throughout the building. Connectivity is generally functional though a few reviewers note it can be patchy on busy days, so bring a mobile hotspot if you have calls or large uploads planned. General reading seating across all floors is also laptop-friendly. A time-limit system exists on at least some study floors, though most visitors report having no trouble finding seats even on weekdays.
Food and drink options are genuinely good for a library. The 1F Kakashi Cafe sells light snacks and drinks from 10:00 to 15:00. On the top floor, Sugakiya is a Nagoya-local ramen and soft-serve chain that reviewers consistently mention with affection. It runs 10:00 to 15:00 with a 14:30 last order. There is also a vending machine and free-seating eating area on the 5th floor open until 19:30 on weekdays and 17:30 on weekends. You can bring your own food and eat there. Dietary options beyond standard ramen and coffee are not confirmed in available sources.
A few things worth knowing before you go. The library is closed on Mondays and goes through an annual maintenance closure in early March for about two weeks. Weekday hours run to 20:00, but Saturday and Sunday close at 18:00. Some reviewers mention the air conditioning can be insufficient in late spring and early summer, so a light layer helps. Car parking is available but paid (first 30 minutes free, then 100 yen per 30 minutes). The library recommends arriving by transit.
The surroundings make for a pleasant half-day. Nagoya Castle is a short walk north, and the whole Sannomaru area is quiet, green, and easy to move around. Multiple reviewers stop by on the way to the castle and end up staying longer than planned.
