タビシロ
Tabi shiro is a renovated 50-year-old ryokanon Jonen Street in central Matsumoto, a 6-minute walk from Matsumoto Castle and 11 minutes from Matsumoto Station. The owners spent six months rebuilding the house with local craftsmen, decorating with antique wood and collected furniture sourced from travels across Japan. The result is a guesthouse with a genuinely distinct character. Part hostel, part community bar, part gelato café.
The lounge is the heart of the property. A pellet stove baropens to the public on Friday and Saturday evenings, drawing Matsumoto locals into the mix. There is a quiet reading room at the front for solo work or focused time, a shared kitchen with full cooking equipment, and a private sauna that guests can book. The staff are universally described as exceptional. Giving personalised maps, city tips, and introducing guests to one another.
This is a guesthouse first, not a purpose-built coliving. There is no dedicated coworking desk setup, but WiFi is available throughout and the quiet room is suited for focused work. Stays are typically short (1-7 nights), though monthly rates exist. The guest mix is roughly half Japanese, half international, making it a rare spot in Japan where spontaneous cross-cultural exchange happens naturally over a drink or a meal. The shared kitchen lets guests cook for themselves. No specific dietary options are listed for the bar or cafe.

The bar area opens to the public on Friday and Saturday evenings (19:00-23:00), bringing Matsumoto locals into the lounge alongside guests. This is a genuine cross-cultural mixer — roughly half of all guests and visitors are Japanese, which is unusual for a budget guesthouse in a tourist city. Staff introduce guests to one another and hand out personalised maps with restaurant, café, and day-trip recommendations. A shared LINE group connects current residents.
Roughly 50% Japanese, 50% international. Mix of solo travellers, couples, and occasional long-term guests. International visitors come from across Europe, North America, and East Asia. Age range skews 20s-40s.
From Matsumoto Station, walk 11 minutes east via Imamachi Street toward the castle. Exit from the East Gate (Oshiro Guchi), cross the Metoba Bridge, and follow Imamachi Street to the Ohte-Icchome junction. Turn left onto Jonen Street. Tabi shiro is on the right. Alternatively, fromKita-Matsumoto Station (Matsumoto Electric Railway), it is a 5-minute walk east. Matsumoto is directly accessible from Nagoya via the JR Shinano limited express (~2 hours) and from Shinjuku, Tokyo via the JR Azusa limited express (~2.5 hours).
Matsumoto is a compact castle city in the Japan Alps, about 2.5 hours from Shinjuku by the JR Azusa limited express and 2 hours from Nagoya by the JR Shinano. The city centre is largely flat and walkable, with Matsumoto Castle, the Nakamachi craft district, and a strong independent cafe and restaurant scene all within a 15-minute walk of the station. For digital nomads it works well as a slower-paced base with excellent rail access to Nagano city, the Northern Alps, and onward connections to Tokyo.
