The Pier | Goto Nagasaki
The Pier is a small coliving space on Goto Islandin Nagasaki Prefecture, operated by yugyo Inc. And housed on the second floor of the SERENDIP HOTEL GOTO building in central Fukue. Six private rooms occupy the floor, each with a semi-double bed, desk, mirror, clothes rack, and outlets. Set up from day one for remote work. The interiors were designed by a Nagasaki-based architecture firm that trained under Kengo Kuma, with a pier aesthetic running through every shared space.
Community is the defining feature. The Pier runs a Discord and WhatsApp group that includes both residents and local islanders, so you can ask for a fishing spot recommendation or a car ride and get an answer within minutes. Past residents report karaoke nights, BBQs on island farms, beach sunsets, stargazing, foot onsen, cooking competitions, and coworking sessions at cafés around the island. The philosophy here is that nomads ("wind people") and locals ("earth people") mix to create something genuinely new. Not just a remote-work retreat.
For remote work, Wi-Fi is available throughout all buildings with no reported issues on video calls. The in-building coworking space is set up as private meeting rooms but lacks natural light. Most residents work from the ground-floor café of the SERENDIP HOTEL GOTO. Ordering a single coffee is perfectly acceptable, and locals do the same. The coliving is5 minutes on foot from Fukue Portand surrounded by a supermarket, Lawson, and Matsumoto Kiyoshi. There is no food service on-site. Dietary options not confirmed. Meals are self-catered using the shared kitchen.

The Pier runs a shared Discord and WhatsApp community that includes current residents and local islanders. Past activities include karaoke nights, BBQs on farms, beach sunsets, stargazing, cooking competitions, foot onsen, Chinese bao making, fishing at the harbour with locals, and shared coworking sessions at island cafés. The Christmas party, organised by residents themselves, was described by guests as "simple, warm, and full of genuine connection." The community philosophy is rooted in mixing nomads ("wind people") and islanders ("earth people") — the space is deliberately open rather than insular.
Mix of Japanese and international remote workers. English-language guests are welcomed and actively accommodated. Reviews written in both English and Japanese. Community includes both nomads and islanders with a strong "trial relocation" angle popular among Japanese remote workers.
Fukue Port is a 5-minute walk (4 minutes by car). From Fukuoka, take a direct flight from Fukuoka Airport to Goto Airport (under 1 hour). Alternatively, high-speed ferries depart from Hakata Port and Nagasaki Port. The building is centrally located in Fukue city, within walking distance of a supermarket, Lawson convenience store, Matsumoto Kiyoshi pharmacy, and the historic samurai residence district. A car or motorbike is recommended for exploring the wider island, though the community regularly helps with rides.
Goto Islands (五島列島) are a remote island chain in Nagasaki Prefecture, reachable by direct flight from Fukuoka in under an hour or by high-speed ferry from Hakata or Nagasaki ports. The main island, Fukue, is known for dramatic rugged coastlines, UNESCO-listed Catholic churches, and an unhurried pace that attracts Japanese remote workers exploring "trial relocation" away from the mainland. Nomads will find a small but tight-knit community, excellent local seafood, and a handful of coliving and coworking options concentrated around Fukue Port — a car or motorbike helps for reaching beaches and heritage sites beyond the town centre.
