Borderless House Sendai Tohoku Daigakumae is a 32-room international share house that opened in February 2025 in Sendai's Kawauchi district, a 6-minute walk from Kawauchi Station on the Subway Tozai Line and directly adjacent to Tohoku University's Kawauchi Campus. It is the first Borderless House location in the Tohoku region.
The house is designed around international exchange: Borderless House deliberately maintains a 50% Japanese, 50% international resident ratio. With residents from 12 countries currently living here, the daily language mix covers Japanese, English, Chinese, Finnish, and more. The operator keeps this balance intentional so both sides can practice languages and share cultures without one group dominating. English ability is not required to move in.
The ground floor common area is the centrepiece. Kitchen and living room flow into a singleopen-plan community space with a 65-inch TV, projector, ping-pong table, and board games. A dedicated study room with monitors is available for focused work or study. The building sits inside a bamboo grove with a garden and terrace for outdoor breaks. All 32 rooms are private singles with individual locks, a desk, a refrigerator, and air conditioning.
Meals are self-catered from the shared kitchen with ample appliances for all cooking styles. With residents from over 12 countries, the kitchen sees a wide variety of cuisines. Vegetarian and vegan residentsself-cater easily given the full kitchen setup. No dietary restrictions are catered for by the operator.

Borderless House keeps its Japanese-to-international resident ratio at exactly 50/50 by design, and adjusts admissions when one side gets too heavy. Current residents come from 12 countries and span Tohoku University students, exchange students, Japanese language school students, and working professionals in their 20s. The common room has self-introduction boards outside every room door so residents can learn who their neighbours are before meeting. Residents can also access other Borderless House locations in Tokyo, Kansai, Korea, and Taiwan through the BORDERLESS TRAVEL program for short stays during holidays or job-hunting trips.

Take the Sendai Subway Tozai Line to Kawauchi Station, then walk 6 minutes to the house. From Sendai Station, the journey takes 7 minutes by train. Sendai Airport is reachable from Sendai Station in 17 minutes (Sendai Airport Access Line rapid, no transfers). From Tokyo, Sendai is approximately 1.5 hours by Shinkansen or 1 hour by flight.
