苔香居コリビング
Colive Kyoto Taikoukyo (苔香居コリビング) is a coliving and coworking space housed inside a nationally registered tangible cultural propertyin the quiet western foothills of Kyoto. The 400-year-old Yamaguchi family estate. A complex of thatched gate, machiya-style main house, and a Taisho-era reception room surrounded by a moss garden. Has been home to the same family for 20 generations. Since 2019, the family has partnered with achicochi LLC to open it to international digital nomads as a place to work and stay.
The coworking space sits inside the heritage buildings, deliberately kept small-group to maintain focus and atmosphere. You work overlooking a garden of dozens of moss species, with a functioning 100-year-old kamado wood-fired stove and irori open hearth nearby. Stable Wi-Fi is confirmed throughout. Basic hours run weekdays 10:00–18:00. Coworking is charged at ¥2,200/day separately from accommodation, or bundled in for longer stays.
Accommodation is in a separate furnished apartment building one minute from the coworking space. Private rooms from ¥5,000/night include utilities, internet, and towel rental. The bath, toilet, kitchen, and living room are shared with other residents. Monthly stays are available at a lower rate (contact for pricing). In 5 years of operation, over 60 residents have stayed a month or longer, primarily from Europe, East Asia, and Southeast Asia.
The location, Nishiyama on the western edge of Kyoto, is 25 minutes from central Kyotoby train and 10 minutes' walk from Kamikatsura Station. Saihoji (the famous moss temple), Matsuo Taisha, and Katsura Rikyu imperial villa are all within walking distance. The Katsura River runs nearby for morning runs. It is further from the tourist crowds of central Kyoto and closer to the hills and temples. A pace of life that makes sustained deep work feel natural.
Optional cultural activities include kamado rice cooking, irori hotpot, soba noodle making, and private tea ceremony in the garden teahouse, bookable separately at ¥5,500–¥22,000/person. The operator also runs a program for those interested in hands-on cultural property maintenance, roughly 30 hours per month in exchange for reduced residence. Dietary options not confirmed. No vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free claims appear on the website.

Taikoukyo Coliving has been operating since 2019 and has hosted over 60 mid-term residents from Europe, East Asia, and Southeast Asia — all staying a month or longer.
