FUJITAYA Kyoto is a guesthouse and coliving space in a traditional machiya-style building in Shimogyo Ward, one stop from Kyoto Station on the subway. Opened in August 2014 by world-traveler Masamitsu Fujita under the concept "Feel Japan," it has since won the 2019 KAYAK Travel Award as Best Hostel in Japan and multiple TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence. The property sits at 22-5 Chudoji Yabunouchicho, a quiet residential block walkable to Nishioji and Toji Temple.
Rooms are Japanese-style private rooms. Tatami floors, futon bedding, air conditioning. Available as two-person, three-person, and four-person configurations. Bathrooms and showers are communal, open 7:00 AM to midnight, with shampoo and body soap provided. There is no dedicated coworking desk area, but free WiFi covers the entire building and the shared living room offers a quiet spot to work during off-peak hours.
The property runs cultural community events. Takoyaki and Temakisushi parties, calligraphy sessions, Japanese confectionery workshops. That bring together guests from around the world. The owner Fujita, who has visited 40 countries and spent 600 days abroad, built FUJITAYA specifically to create cultural exchange around Japan. Agarden, shared living room, and bicycle rental(¥600/day) round out the communal infrastructure. The shared kitchen lets guests cook their own meals, which suits any dietary preference. Vegetarian, vegan, or otherwise. For digital nomads, FUJITAYA is an affordable Kyoto base camp with a local atmosphere rather than a formal coworking setup.

By bus from central Kyoto, several routes serve the area. Kyoto Station itself connects to Tokyo via Shinkansen (approx. 2h15m on Nozomi).
About Shimogyo
Shimogyo is the ward directly surrounding JR Kyoto Station, making it the most transit-connected area in the city. From here the Shinkansen reaches Osaka in 15 minutes and Tokyo in around 2 hours 15 minutes. The neighborhood is dense with convenience stores, budget restaurants, and practical services — less traditionally scenic than Gion or Arashiyama, but highly functional for longer stays.
