広島市立中央図書館
Hiroshima's main municipal librarysits in Central Park (Chuo Koen), a five-minute walk from Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome. It is surrounded by mature trees and the kind of hushed green that makes you want to stay longer than planned. The building is old. Reviewers are consistent about that. But the serene setting compensates. Views from the reading room windows look out onto parkland, and the atmosphere inside is quiet and focused.
For working, the first-floor study room and loungeare the main draw. Individual tables on the 1F lounge give each person their own space, and the study room has been independently praised for being spacious enough that even during busy periods there are usually seats available. Power outlets for laptops are confirmed by multiple reviewers. Free WiFi is available throughout the building. The study room entrance is reportedly a little hard to find. Ask at the front desk if you can't locate it.
The third floor holds the Hiroshima collection. Peace materials, atomic bomb documents, and local history resources that you won't find in most libraries anywhere in the world. This is one of the designated UN depository libraries in Japan, so the reference stacks are unusually deep. The general book collection is smaller than you might expect from a central library, but inter-library loans from across the city's branch network are easy to arrange online.
Food on-site is limited to vending machines and a bring-your-own-food lounge. The cafeteria that reviewers mention in older posts closed around 2022. The former cafeteria space now functions as a rest area where you can eat food brought from outside. Dietary options are not available on-site. Grab something before you arrive.
Important. As of early 2026, the library is temporarily closed at its current Motomachi location. The city is planning to relocate it to a new building near Hiroshima Station. Check the official website before visiting to confirm current status. When open, weekday hours run 10:00–21:00, and weekend/holiday hours until 18:00. Closed on the second Monday of each month.
