カフェラテ
A small espresso bar in Kamihatchobori, opened in July 2024 on a quiet street between Hiroshima Castle and Shukkeien Garden. Nine seats total. Three two-person tables and a short counter. The owner runs it with one or two staff and makes every drink on a proper espresso machine. Travelers on the way to the castle keep finding it and calling it the best coffee they had in Japan.
The signature affogato pudding (880 yen) is the thing people come back for. Firm pudding, ice cream on top, and espresso poured over it at the table. Reviewers in a dozen languages call it a highlight of their trip to Hiroshima. It sometimes sells out and is not available as takeaway. Coffee drinks run around 750 yen for most lattes. The menu covers espresso, hand-drip, and a wide range of flavored lattes including hazelnut, raspberry, coconut, caramel, chestnut, and vanilla. The matcha latte is popular but strength can vary. Order strong if you want it bold.
Dietary options are solid for a small cafe. Oat milk and soy milk are both available (oat milk adds 180 yen, soy milk adds 50 yen). All baked goods are made in-house using domestic organic ingredients. Muffins, pound cakes, and cookies are vegan and gluten-free. Vegan scones are available but contain wheat flour so they are not gluten-free. The owner confirms this in review replies. Decaf is available.
A few things worth knowing before you go. The cafe has no public wifi. One review puts it plainly. "A cafe without wifi." There are no reports of power outlets at seats. This is not a workspace. It opens at7am daily, which is early for Japan and appreciated by people grabbing coffee before the castle opens. Thursday mornings are the busiest slot. You order and pay at the counter first before taking a seat. Card and QR pay accepted.
The owner is the reason the reviews keep coming in at 4.9 stars. He explains coffees, gives sightseeing recommendations, and sometimes plays electric guitar for customers when the conversation turns to music. Multiple reviewers came back two days in a row. If you want a good coffee and a human moment in Hiroshima, this is the stop.
